November 29th, 2011 - The Florida College Democrats today challenged Republicans in the Florida Senate to justify lines proposed on Monday that split multiple campus communities throughout the state across district lines, diminishing the voices of college students in the electoral process.
Students negatively affected by these harmful proposals include those who attend USF, UCF, FIU and FAU, among other institutions. District lines proposed for these campuses on Monday are drawn to split college campus communities between two, three, or even four districts, a common method of gerrymandering intended to disenfranchise targeted populations.

November 4th, 2011 - We, the Florida College Democrats Women's Caucus, are proud to call ourselves feminists. But believe it or not, there are many individuals who are scared of the word feminist. Indeed, feminism has gone down in the books as being a dangerous “F-word,” one that promotes anti-men attitudes and rhetoric. Of course as rational beings of the progressive movement, we know better.

September 20th, 2011 - With 2012 just along the corner, the Florida College Democrats appear to be wasting no time in gearing up for an epic campaign. At FAU, on Saturday, September 24th, the FCD kicked off its first fundraiser for the 2011-2012 year, Standing With Students 101. The event, hosted by the FAU chapter of the College Democrats, was a genuine success.

September 20th, 2011 - The Florida College Democrats Women’s Caucus are proud members of the Democratic Women’s Club of Florida, Inc. (DWCF). Founded in 1956, the DWCF was formed to bring together all Democratic Women’s Club in Florida to provide a forum for discussion of public matters, to support qualified candidates for public office and to encourage qualified Democratic women to seek elected office. The first organizational meeting for the state club took place at the Princess Martha Hotel in St. Petersburg on May 24, 1956, which was the day chosen by Eleanor Roosevelt as Democratic Women’s Day.

August 15th, 2011 - In 1872, Susan B. Anthony—a woman known for always doing big things—cast an illegal ballot in the U.S. presidential election. Her attempt to vote resulted in her arrest, but needless to say that only further fueled Anthony’s aspirations for universal women’s suffrage. Finally, nearly 50 years after Anthony’s arrest, the fight for women’s suffrage found victory on August 26, 1920. Indeed, it was this day that the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution finally became law, guaranteeing that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

August 10th, 2011 - The FCD Women’s Caucus works to organize and foster the growth of Women’s Caucuses across the Sunshine State—and it should also be noted that we are now an official chapter of the Democratic Women’s Club of Florida. We also firmly believe in building progressive coalitions both on and off campus. This is why when we were invited by the Democratic Women’s Information Network (DWIN) to be in Jacksonville to have Dinner with Grace Nelson, we were there in a heartbeat.

August 9th, 2011 - This past weekend the Florida College Democrats held our second strategy session of the year- this time to plan out the Fall Semester. Details about topics from fund raising and caucuses to convention and campaigning were ironed out over a six-hour period that included some of our most engaged chapters. One notable plan hatched was our Activ8 Pledge, a commitment you will continue hear about throughout the year.

July 18th, 2011 - Democracy for America held a Campaign Academy in Tampa on July 16-17 and nine USF College Democrats along with several FCD officers successfully completed the training! On Saturday we were joined by Jim Dean (Chair of DFA, brother of Howard Dean). He mentioned that we should pay attention because we were the future of the party! Needless to say, we took his advice.

July 17th, 2011 - The FCD Women’s Caucus Chairwoman is back in the Sunshine State after a three day visit to Washington DC for the Planned Parenthood Youth Policy Summit! For those of you not familiar with the Planned Parenthood, they are America’s most trusted provider of reproductive health care. Their skilled health care professionals are dedicated to offering men, women, and teens high-quality, affordable medical care. Indeed, one in five American women has chosen Planned Parenthood for health care at least once in her life.

July 10th, 2011 - College Students for Barack Obama held its 2012 Campaign Kick-off Phone Banking event on July 9th – officially marking the beginning of the electoral slugfest that the Presidential Campaign is quickly shaping up to be.

July 1st, 2011 - After riding a wave of public anger and discontent regarding unemployment, the newly elected tea-party Republican legislature and Governor Rick Scott promised to create jobs and get people back to work by passing pro-business legislation and follow the dogma that is the conservative principal of “tickle-down economics”. Well – the first legislative session is over and the laws that they have passed were set to take effect on 07/1/2011 and needless to say 2011 will be remembered by over 10.5% of Floridians as the year without a job.

June 27th, 2011 - The National Organization for Women (NOW) is the largest organization of feminist activities in the United States. With over 500,000 contributing members and 550 chapters throughout all 50 states and DC, NOW is a name that the Women’s Caucus is very familiar with.

June 18th, 2011 - The Florida College Democrats (FCD for short) took DC by storm during the weekend of June 17th, as we attended the College Democrats of America summer conference. The FCD funded two students from any chartered school that wished to attend the conference, and ended up being one of the biggest delegations at the conference.

June 13th, 2011 - A night to remember. Those are the words that come to mind when thinking about the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner hosted by the Florida Democratic Party (FDP). The event, held at the Westin Diplomat Resort in South Florida’s Hollywood, provided an exceptional opportunity for the Florida College Democrats (FCD) to engage and show their support for the Party.

May 31st, 2011 - At the FCD’s Summer Strategy Session, we decided to launch a Rent an Officer to Activate Democrats (ROAD) program. Several chapters have already applied for our ROAD program, where they can “rent” an FCD Executive Board Member or Caucus Chair to come to an event on their campus. We quickly realized that teaching by example will greatly benefit our chapters that may need a little extra help with recruiting new members through tabling, planning chapter meetings, networking at DEC meetings, or even with building a strong e-board. This program will give chapters the opportunity to learn how to recruit and establish themselves on and off campus.
May 16th, 2011 - On May 15th, the Florida College Democrats held our first Strategy Session. These sessions take place before the start of each semester, so that the FCD can plan its major initiatives and provide trainings and information to chapter presidents.
May 8th, 2011 - Since our convention one month ago, we have been accepting applications for a webmaster, a constitution committee chair, and caucus chairs. Appointed positions allow the FCD to take a more detailed approach to the things we care most about by engaging the people who care most about them. This allows us to be a better resource for you in whatever capacity you need.
April 11th, 2011 - The Florida College Democrats held our annual state convention in the spring of 2011, the weekend of April 8-10, at the University of Miami. Members from eleven chapters travelled to Miami from all over the state, to learn from the trainings and speakers at our conference. Over 100 College Democrats registered for the conference.
